Step by step

1. Speak to the Examiner in the Exam Centre south of the Digsite. Meet the skill and Druidic Ritual requirements.
2. Take the unstamped letter to the Varrock Museum curator and use it on him.
3. Return the stamped letter to the Examiner. Search the Exam Centre bookcase for the chemistry book and cupboard for a rock pick.
4. Find the three students in the digsite and ask about their missing rock samples.
5. Search the bush beside the urns for one rock sample.
6. Pickpocket a Digsite workman for another rock sample and a specimen brush.
7. Give tea to the panning guide. Take a panning tray from the tent, use it at the river panning point, and search the muddy tray for a rock sample and uncut opal.
8. Return the panning sample to the pink student, workman sample to the green student, and bush sample to the orange student.
9. Pass the first exam: study of earth and history; qualified examinees only; gloves, boots, and proper tools.
10. Speak to all three students again for the second exam answers.
11. Pass the second exam: sealed rough samples; handle finds carefully with gloves; strike a rock at its cleaving point.
12. Speak to all three students again. Give the pink student the uncut opal from panning.
13. Pass the third exam: specimen jars; short careful brush strokes; keep bones away from other samples.
14. Search the sacks near the tent for a specimen jar. Keep your trowel, specimen brush, and jar.
15. Use the trowel on the level-three soil in the northeast dig area to uncover the Talisman of Zaros.
16. Use the talisman on the archaeological expert in the Exam Centre to receive a permission scroll.
17. Use the permission scroll on a Digsite workman.
18. Fasten a rope to each surface winch. Climb down the eastern winch and speak to the underground workman for a chest key.
19. Climb back up, then descend the western winch to collect an arcenia root. Return to the surface.
20. Use the key on the chest in the digsite tent for unidentified powder. Search the specimen tray for charcoal.
21. Use the trowel on the marked barrel by the tent, then an empty vial on the open barrel for unidentified liquid.
22. Use the powder and liquid on the archaeological expert to identify ammonium nitrate and nitroglycerin.
23. Use a pestle and mortar on the charcoal to grind it.
24. Mix ammonium nitrate with nitroglycerin. Add ground charcoal, then an arcenia root to make an explosive compound.
25. Climb down the western winch and use the compound on the blocked bricks.
26. Use a tinderbox on the bricks, then search the cleared passage to enter the chamber.
27. Take the stone tablet in the chamber. Search the brick on its south side to retrace the cleared passage and climb back up the rope.
28. Use the stone tablet on the archaeological expert for two gold bars, two quest points, and level-scaled Mining and Herblaw experience.

The game journal confirms quest completion and the first conversation. Game progress can take up to five minutes to appear while you are logged in. Mark the remaining steps as you do them; the game does not save every substep.
